A luminous period family house by the sea

Edwardian period semi-detached family house by the sea house for sale

A seaside house with airbnb business potential

The house has a wonderful space in the attic with space for two double beds, a substantial open landing space where we put chairs and a small coffee table, and a bathroom with a shower. It’s lit by sky lights so the whole space is really airy and a pleasure to be in at any time of year.

The people who owned the house before us used this space to host language students. We were always a bit too busy to take on that responsibility, but last summer we decided to try renting the space out as an airbnb for a month. It worked well because we were able to offer guests the bathroom for their exclusive use, and we gave them a kettle and everything they needed to make tea and coffee. We asked them not to enter any other part of the house apart from the attic, the hall and the staircase, and that way we were able to have really good social distancing. We also encouraged them to use the back garden, accessing it via the side gate.

Airbnb opportunity, semi-detached house, Herne Bay, Kent

To preserve social distancing we allowed guests only in the hall and stairwell and in the attic. We used a small table with hand sanitiser to mark the entrance to our part of the house downstairs.

We were not sure how it would go, but in the end it couldn’t have gone better. We were almost fully booked and we made good money. We really enjoyed hosting the guests who were all lovely, even though we were limited to speaking to them at a distance from outside. They evidently enjoyed it too because we received 100% 5* reviews!
